Specialist teachers from Scotland will offer lessons for strings, keyboards and accompaniment instruments, as well as band work. Your fee includes seven nights’ accommodation, all meals, classes and optional activities. Transfers to and from camp to the airport or central city can also be arranged. https://www.scotstring.nz/teachers.php# CATHERINE FRASER - FIDDLE “An outstanding player, Catherine has a rare grasp of Scottish music....and she has a knack of composing and interpreting slow airs.” The Living Tradition Magazine UK Scots/Australian fiddler Catherine Fraser has gained a reputation as a world-class performer and teacher, and presents the music of her heritage with finesse, passion and sensitivity. Acknowledged for her ability to combine a high level of technical skill with a rare depth of emotional expression, Catherine has inspired and taught many of New Zealand’s own Scottish fiddle community! http://www.catherinefraser.com/ BRUCE MACGREGOR – FIDDLE
Bruce MacGregor has been one of the most influential traditional musicians in Scotland over the last two decades. Forming the multi-award winning Highland fiddle super group “Blazin’ Fiddles” in 1998, Bruce is also the voice of Scottish folk, as long term presenter of BBC Radio Scotland’s “Travelling Folk”, which he has now been presenting for over a decade. His driving, yet lyrical, style of playing alongside his passion for the history and culture of the Highlands, has helped inspire a new generation of musicians and lovers of traditional music. A pupil of the legendary fiddle teacher, Donald Riddell MBE, Bruce has taken Highland fiddle music to a new level, featuring on TV, theatre and video game (Assassins Creed III). Bruce has found himself playing for Sir Billy Connolly, Sir Sean Connery, Prince Edward and accompanying Ewan McGregor and Sharlene Spitteri, Eddi Reader, Justin Currie and duetting with world renowned violinist Nicola Benedetti. Recently Bruce’s role as a composer has come into the spotlight with the launch of the “Highlanders Revenge and other tales” in January 2020. https://www.brucemacgregor.scot/
Ceol Aneas
June 2024 We are delighted to announce our headline guests for Ceol Aneas 2024. Our ongoing partnership with the National Celtic Festival Australia has again made it possible to present a trio of world class Irish traditional musicians: Orlaith McAulliffe on flute, Dylan Carlos on fiddle, and John McCartin on guitar. Órlaith McAuliffe is one of the leading flute and whistle players in Irish traditional music, holder of over 20 All-Ireland titles – at different age levels, solo and in duos and trios. She was voted Young Musician of the Year in the 2016 TG4 Gradam Ceoil Awards. Raised in North London by parents from Killarney, she started under her mother’s tutelage on the whistle at 9 years old. She is now a regular performer and workshop provider at Irish music festivals, and has been a member of the National Folk Orchestra of Ireland and the band Crossharbour. She is also a medical doctor, working on the front-line in the NHS. She collaborates musically with many different Irish musicians, including her concertina player sister Brogan, who holds 4 All-Ireland titles. Dylan Carlos comes from a very musical family in Co Roscommon – a part of the country best known for flute playing. Dylan collaborates with many musicians, within the Irish tradition and more broadly, performing regularly with Co. Tipperary singer-songwriter Cormac Looby and has also played with the groups “Gatehouse” and “Garadice”. He is part of the group “Carlos Sweeney McCartin” – their debut album (2019) garnered critical acclaim. Dylan is a past all Ireland winner on fiddle, plays and teaches regularly at festivals around Ireland and abroad. John McCartin from Newtowngore in County Leitrim is both a guitar and fiddle player. He holds an MA in Traditional Music Performance from the University of Limerick. John is a member of the band Garadice, who were nominated for an RTE Folk Award in 2024, and performs as part of the trio, Carlos Sweeney McCartin. He has recorded and performed with the likes of Eleanor Shanley, Donal Lunny, Lunasa, Dervish, Back West and Vinnie Kilduff. Join us in Nelson over King's Birthday weekend for an unforgettable experience at Ceol Aneas! https://www.facebook.com/ceolaneas |

RSCDS NZ Branch - Summer School
We have an update on the school - reflected in our new logo. We've come to the realisation that travel restrictions are likely to remain pretty tight in Aotearoa NZ for the foreseeable future (some even predicting through to June 2022! ), which makes it unrealistic to hope that we'll be able to host international guests at this Summer School So ... we're now focussing on a domestic school - a gathering of our local friends, whanau and clans: Oor Gaitherin We know we're lucky to be able to gather in numbers, in person - to hold hands and dance, to advance and retire without masks, to form sets outside our bubbles So we're going to celebrate that! Australian mates and cobbers - we're still very hopeful of a trans-Tasman bubble that will allow you to join us ... everyone keep your fingers crossed! (And follow the social distancing, mask wearing, hand washing rules!) All those who had already registered have received this update. Sending much aroha out across the world to all our dancing whanau - hope to be with you in person soon! |

Join The Scottish Fiddle Orchestra and fill virtual buckets for Marie Curie
The Scottish Fiddle Orchestra will be broadcasting a full concert recording on YouTube on Saturday the 16th of May, 2020 in place of our postponed concert to support our loyal followers and our charity partners Marie Curie. Marie Curie provides care and support for people who are dying or living with a terminal illness, as well as their loved ones. As the Coronavirus pandemic unfolds their nurses and hospices are on the frontline and needed more than ever to keep caring for dying people with and without coronavirus. Just at the time their hospices and community nursing services are needed more than ever their income has been decimated by the lockdown. As a consequence they have had to launch an Emergency Appeal to raise the quarter of a million pounds they need every week to run Scottish services. So, why not sit back in the comfort and safety of your own home and join Blair Parham, Colette Ruddy, Dennis Haggerty, Robert Lovie and The SFO for a great night in and perhaps in return donate to the Marie Curie Emergency Appeal. Let's try and fill those virtual buckets to the brim. Come and join us at http://sfo.org.uk/join-the-scottish-fiddle-orchestra-and-f…/ and donate via the link below or Text NURSE to 70633. |
World Fiddle Day World Fiddle Day will be celebrated again this year, though in difficult circumstances for us all, on Saturday May 16th. Covid 19 safety advice to follow soon. The Covid 19 in 2020 has created a very difficult set of circumstances for the arts community throughout the world and across all cultures. It has presented mankind with a great deal of tragedy, sorrow and hardship. In recognition of the Italian Peoples' early response to a swift and savage outbreak and by virtue of ordinary people rapidly encouraging hope, community and resilience through performances of wonderful music from balconies and street corners for neighbours and friends, the Italian People have been collectively named as Patrons for World Fiddle Day 2020. In making this nomination, it is clearly recognised that the Italian People are not alone nor unique in their actions. Artists around the world have freely and unselfishly played their part in lifting spirits and inspiring hope for the world's communities in very troubled times. Thanks to them all wherever they are and whatever they play and long may their music inspire, reward and heal those in need. |

Originz are a 15 piece fusion band from Aotearoa New Zealand, featuring a wild array of instruments from bagpipes and percussion to trumpets and voice. Bring a picnic (there is no food sold on the Island), come on the special concert ferry which will leave Auckland at 1pm and come via Gulf Harbour at 1:50pm arriving on Tiritiri at 2:20pm. The concert runs from 4:30 to 6:30pm so there is plenty of time for a walk with the birds and a swim beforehand. The evening ferry leaves at 7:30pm Bookings: Fullers 360 Phone 09 367 9111 orhttp://www.fullers.co.nz/ Cost: $103 this includes the ferry and concert. |

New Zealand Tattoo
Apr 12 - Apr 13 6;30pm Central Energy Trust Arena 61 Pascal Street, Palmerston North, New Zealand 4440 The New Zealand Tattoo 2019 - a nationally significant pageant of music, marching, manoeuvres, bands, fly pasts, kapa haka, dance, pomp and ceremony - takes place at Palmerston North’s Central Energy Trust Arena on 12 & 13 April 2019. It will provide a striking centrepiece for a distinctively Kiwi themed programme, celebrating New Zealand’s military and cultural traditions. Tickets are on sale now! Don't miss out. It is with a heavy heart, Palmerston North City Council advises that following careful consideration, they have decided to postpone the New Zealand Tattoo.
While the Tattoo was to feature a large number of New Zealand’s top pipe and brass bands and kapa haka groups, a significant part of the event was to feature military displays that included firearms and explosives. Following the recent events in Christchurch, Council considers it would be inappropriate to host an event of this nature. We really appreciate your support for the event and understand the disappointment the postponement may bring you. Due to the complexity of the event a postponement date has yet to be determined, however, we will keep you informed. All current ticket holders will be given priority booking options for the new show dates to ensure you are guaranteed an opportunity to purchase before tickets go on general sale. Anyone who has purchased tickets will receive a full refund. You can arrange this by emailing [email protected] with your customer details. Keep an eye on this page for updates. |
