APR 20
ScotStringNZ 2019 · Hosted by Anne-Marie Forsyth Apr 20 at 4 PM – Apr 27 at 7 PM Bella Rakha Retreat Centre & Creative Venue 581 West Coast Rd, Oratia, Auckland, New Zealand 0604 Join us for another fabulous Scottish music camp in lovely west Auckland! This year's tutors are the amazing Adam Sutherland (fiddle), the magnificent Maggie Adamson (fiddle) and the scintillating Sandie Brechin (accordion, mixed instruments)! Enrolments have been rolling in already so don't delay - numbers must be capped at 40. Registration page and FAQs found at www.scotstring.nz |
It's getting closer!Hi everyone, 28/2/19
Just under two months to go and things are looking really great. We do still have a few more spaces available and it would be lovely if we could fill these with a balance of fiddles, accordions and young people - or even some young people (young at heart?) who can play both accordion and fiddle! If you know of anyone who hasn't registered yet but should, please persuade them to come and have a go! Remember also that part-time and casual students are welcomed. Who knows, maybe someone will give it a go for a day this year and love it so much that they come for the whole camp next year! So there's room for more people whichever way they want to take part. For those who have misplaced the information from my January email, payment is due and the bank account details are: Scottish Celtic Music Group 12-3484-0024634-00 And the camp dates are Saturday 20 - Saturday 27 April. There will be an Auckland concert in the afternoon of Saturday 27 April and although I realise that some people have flights to catch, everyone else is incredibly strongly encouraged to take part. I'll be in touch closer to the time with a roster for transfers - both drivers and passengers - and a list of people who have requested linen/towels. In the meantime, we will need volunteers to help with food preparation before the start of camp. Is that you? Best wishes, Anne-Marie |

Ceol Aneaus Queen's Birthday Weekend in Nelson New Zealand 1st - 4th June 2018
Ceol Aneas 2018 to be held at Nelson Centre for Musical ArtsGreat news, Ceol Aneas is to be held at the newly revamped Nelson Center for Musical Arts. This will bring all our classes, ceili, workshops and concert into the one venue.
Refurbished and rebranded, the old Nelson School of Music has become The Nelson Center of Musical Arts. This rebranding includes a welcome for all aspects of the musical community. We are very happy to be included in this new vision, it seems like a perfect match for us.
The concert will be held in the magnificent historic auditorium built in 1901. Some of you will remember the amazing tutors' concerts that we used to hold there in the early days of Ceol Aneas. There is also a smaller, brand new performance venue that we will use for "Meet the Tutor" workshops and the Ceili. Our classes will be held in a range of purpose built classrooms and practice spaces.
The Nelson Center for Musical Arts is at 48 Nile Street (on the corner of Collingwood Street) which is nice and central to all of our other venues. It is an easy 10 minutes walk from the YHA and all of our session venues are even closer.
Irish Music Classes
All classes are taught in the traditional style, by ear, and students are
expected to be familiar with playing traditional Irish music and comfortable
learning by ear. The classes are not suitable for beginners. Most classes will
be taught at an intermediate to advanced level. If you have any questions, or
would like advice in evaluating your playing level, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Tutor Line Up
We announced our full tutor line up in the last newsletter, if you missed it or want to check out their full bios, links to video clips and other information, then visit our website here: http://www.irishmusic.org.nz/ceol-aneas-irish-music-festival/classes-tutors/
We are very happy to add Robert Zielinski as a fiddle tutor to our line up. We are anticipating good numbers of fiddle students and so it's great to have two classes to be able to keep the group sizes nice and small. We stream the two classes and swap the tutors after day two so that all students get to experience both tutors.
Robert Zielinski, Fiddle, Australiawww.irishmusic.org.nz
Robert grew up in Perth Western Australia. He learnt to play by ear from his mentors, Mick Doherty and Sean Doherty (no relation.) Mick hails from a long line of travelling fiddle players, storytellers and tin smiths from Donegal. His Uncle the iconic Fiddler Johnny Doherty was featured on RTE’s documentary “The Fiddler On The Road”.
At age seventeen Robert moved to Ireland and spent fourteen years on the west coast - immersing himself in the traditional music of the older players, including ten years with one of his most loved mentors Andy Davey, master of the Sligo style.
Robert taught for three years at the Galway School of Traditional Irish Music and in the year 2000 he won Ireland’s Michael Coleman Traditional Fiddle Player of the year Award.
He has toured in both the USA and Europe and played at Fairbridge festival, National Folk Festival, Flybynite Musicicians club and recently was guest soloist with the Perth Chamber Orchestra.
In 2013 Robert and Mick Doherty recorded their debut Album “Out West” released by the National Library of Australia to preserve the musical legacy of Mick's family
Bodhrán Class - Michael Dewes This year we are offering a one off, afternoon Bodhrán class, run by Micheal Dewes. It will run for 1 hour and will be limited to 10 students. It's free for any registered students and $20 for anyone else. If you are interested, please contact [email protected] - first in first served.
Introduced to Irish traditional music when living in Brisbane in 2010. Michael instantly fell in love with it. Upon moving back home to NZ he took up the bodhrán, finding it a natural move from previous years playing the drum kit. After a year of being self taught he traveled to Ireland to attend the Junior Davey Bodhrán Academy. Junior has been highly influential in Michael's playing style, which incorporates a combination of modern techniques while intertwining a rich variety of tones. As well as playing in sessions around the country, Michael is now making his own line of bodhráns.
Sponsorship We would like to thank the generous support of our sponsors who help make Ceol Aneas possible.
