Fiddle Lessons
If you have learnt violin in the past, or are new to the fiddle, I can teach you to play Celtic tunes in the Celtic style. Along the way you will learn to read music and to pick up tunes by ear.
My Waipu studio overlooks the Caledonian Park in Waipu and Auckland lessons are in the 100 year old Oratia Church Hall. Both provide a relaxed, pleasant environment for learning. I have many years' experience as a registered teacher, a classical orchestral violinist and a professional Celtic musician. BIO
Kathleen is a young fiddle player who is passionate about the traditional music of Scotland and Ireland. She has 15 years playing experience, and has received tuition from some of the world’s top fiddle tutors at camps and workshops in New Zealand, Scotland and Spain. She has a deep love for and understanding of the subtleties of the music and the repertoire. In 2012 she came 2nd in the Advanced section of the National Scottish Fiddle competition held at the Waipu highland games, showing she is one of the top young fiddle players in the country. Kathleen performed for many years with Scottish Fiddle band Fiddlelore. This involved a trip to Scotland and Ireland in 2011 to engage with their musical roots. Kathleen has taught private pupils and run workshops at folk festivals for many years. She is a very good teacher, who loves to see her pupils enjoying themselves and getting passionate about the world of folk music. |
TEACHING INFO
Kathleen is a vibrant young fiddle teacher who loves connecting with new people and seeing them improve. Kathleen specialises in teaching traditional Scottish and Irish fiddle music. This is an exciting repertoire of music for performance, dancing and enjoyment. These styles are very specific and complex, with many nuances in bowing and ornamentation which make the music come alive. Lessons are mainly taught by ear. Learning aurally has many benefits in terms of developing memory and musicality. This traditional method of teaching is similar to the Suzuki method. Kathleen can also teach reading of music, and classical music for beginners. Open to teaching individuals or groups. |

The inspiration to play violin came late, at the age of 18, and a ton of reputable violin teachers in my hometown of San Antonio discouraged me from trying to play at all. “You’re too old to learn,” they’d say (as if learning is reserved just for five-year-olds…). I’m really glad that I didn’t listen, because I’ve had a lot of crazy fun and success playing this thing! Don’t get me wrong, it was rough in the beginning… I remember sitting on my bed after screeching away for thirty minutes during a practice session and thinking I’d NEVER bow a single clear and pretty note. I wish I had recorded those early practice sessions as proof. Even my sweet grandparents said it sounded terrible! So I hope my message is clear: you CAN learn the violin at ANY age. And I’d love to help you! I promise you it will be one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself. I’ve created this site to answer questions about learning the fiddle and my journey. I don’t pretend to be a virtuoso or master pedagogue of violin technique, but I’m sharing what I’ve found as I go, and keeping an open ear along the way. Take Your Seat at the Session and Make the Virtual a Reality! OAIM has just launched it’s brand new virtual reality / 360 degree Irish music sessions. Grab a VR headset, slip your smart phone in and play along with OAIM tutors and friends. Join Tola Custy (Fiddle), Kirsten Allstaff (Flute), Neil Fitzgibbon (Fiddle), Lisa Canny (Harp and Banjo), Ger Chambers (Accordion), and MJ McMahon (Guitar) in Cooleys Pub, Ennistimon and play along with some well known session tunes. Music notation and chords are provided for every tune. Each of the tunes played in the VR Sessions are taken from our 50 tune challenge. Learn 50 well known session tunes in a year, and practice them in sets at VR Sessions! Alternatively, these sessions can be enjoyed in 360 degrees on a desktop, laptop or tablet; manipulate the viewer so you can focus on which musicians or instruments you prefer. This fully immersive Irish music experience can be accessed here at the oaim.ie website. I am currently teaching students all over the world online and absolutely love it! I play and teach a variety of different fiddle styles including Country, Irish, Canadian, Scottish, & English, as well as my own compositions! My fiddling career really started when I won the intermediate overall winner at a country music competition back in 2019. Since then I have performed at many different events, including Gold Guitar Awards where I won the intermediate instrumental section.
