Trad String Fling May 4 - May 6 · EDT
with Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas
The Ashokan Center
477 Beaverkill Road, Olivebridge, New York 12461
World-class Scottish traditional musicians and teachers Alasdair and Natalie will return to host their fifth Trad String Fling music camp at the Ashokan Center. Their workshops are a fantastic learning experience and tremendous fun for all!
Alasdair and Natalie begin by working with everyone together, using an effective group teaching approach designed to carry players of all levels to new heights. Each player has the opportunity to learn both melody and accompaniment, with coaches on hand to offer accessible remedial sessions. Later in the weekend, Alasdair and Natalie also host separate fiddle and cello break-out sessions.
While tunes and techniques are taught, there’s a strong emphasis on self-expression, finding your inner musician and bringing the music to life, rather than just playing the notes. Though the weekend is geared towards intermediate and advanced players, less experienced musicians are welcome to attend and record classes, enjoy the wonderful music, and take part in the lively dancing and musical fun.
Tuition includes all classes and activities, dance, concert, and meals. Lodging is additional. Work exchange and youth scholarships are available!

Natalie Haas is a vibrant and creative cellist, a seasoned performer and recording artist, and a skilled and experienced teacher. A graduate of the Juilliard School in New York City, Natalie discovered the cello at age nine. In addition to having extensive classical music training, she is accomplished in a broad array of fiddle genres. Her musical journey found purpose when she fell in love with Celtic music at Alasdair Fraser’s Valley of the Moon Scottish Fiddling School at age 11. Inspired and encouraged by Alasdair, she began to investigate the cello’s potential for rhythmic accompaniment to fiddle tunes. Her and Fraser’s duo release, Fire & Grace, was awarded the Best Album of the Year in the Scots Trad Music Awards 2004. More information about Natalie can be found on her website

Redwood Music Camp - Memorial Day Weekend: Friday, May 25th – Monday, May 28th, 2018
Camp Harmon, 16403 Highway 9, Boulder Creek, California

Camp Harmon, 16403 Highway 9, Boulder Creek, California
The Fire Instructors
Redwood Music Camp is a three-day weekend music camp experience for adults, featuring the members of Molly's Revenge and The Fire as faculty, as well as Shelley Phillips teaching clawhammer ukulele, Jesse Autumn for harps, Nicola Canzano for piano, and Steve Palazzo for old-time guitar. For 2018, we'll be at a new location: Camp Harmon in Boulder Creek, California (about an hour and a half from the Bay Area). The site features large, well-lighted cabins in the redwoods that sleep up to ten in single-level beds, although we'll likely place no more than five people in each one. Each cabin has its own bathroom, and shower facilities are a short walk away. The woodland setting has multiple venues for practice, a large dining hall for jamming and concerts, and room for small tents, RVs, and parking.
Musical styles of camp workshops range from Irish and Scottish to American traditional, but with a strong focus on Celtic. Participants get the full music immersion experience of learning in small workshop settings in the morning and early afternoon, and sessions bringing it all together in the late afternoon and evening, plus lots of informal jamming. Perfect for experienced players who want to up their game, or those who have been meaning to get that fiddle out of the closet. All levels welcome! Open to players of fiddle, flute, pennywhistle, recorder, oboe, harp, guitar, dulcimer, accordion, percussion, banjo, mandolin, keyboards, ukulele and more! Other activities include singing, dancing, swimming, crafts, hiking, and bamboo flute making.
Tuition is $385, and includes three nights of lodging, with all meals included from dinner on Friday to lunch on Monday. This year a day rate of $75 will be offered once the class schedule is posted; day rate participants will join us for lunch and dinner, but no overnight lodging will be provided.

June
Haugaard's West Denmark Fiddle School
Wisconsin Looking to inspire and attract students, recognized Danish fiddler Harald Haugaard, founder of the successful International Fiddle School in Breklum Germany, is opened an American version on the shores of beautiful Little Butternut Lake at West Denmark, near Luck, Wisconsin. Check in begins on Sunday, June 10 from 3:30 pm until about 5:30 pm with a picnic supper followed by an orientation to the fiddle school. There will be 4 days of instruction ending on Thursday, June 14 with a final concert in the evening. Playing music by ear is essential for learning folk music, sheet music will not be available until the Fiddle School had concluded. For people who primarily play using sheet music it is recommended that they spend time listening to music and learning to play from a recording, an example to use is given with the playing level description. It is also important for people to learn to adjust to the teaching and playing styles of the instructors. In addition to learning tunes that everyone can be comfortable playing, part of the experience is to push each participant's playing, to a higher level with something challenging to work toward. Expect to leave the West Denmark Fiddle School with many things to work on until the next Fiddle School. Fiddle School enrollment is full for 2018! We are developing a waiting list- Please call Mark for more information. |
This school offers intensive instruction by professional instructors in each discipline. The school is open to all ages and to all levels of skill from beginners to competing players. Each student is placed in a class of six-eight students within their level of experience and skill level. Optional classes are offered in the afternoon, such as pipe band techniques, bagpipe and reed maintenance, and pibroch. Held once again at the Army and Navy Academy of Carlsbad – a superb, beachside location conducive to learning – this is the ideal location in which to improve on your piping and drumming. http://www.collegeofpiping.org/t |
