The Easter Youth Gaitherin'
is an exciting opportunity for youg musicians to come and take part in three days of workshops led by some of Scotland's finest traditional musicians. Each participant can chose from three options, including fiddle (mixed levels), whistle, song and groupwork. We are delighted to announce that this years EYG will be based in Leith Theatre. This event for 10-18yr olds is all about creativity, making friends through music and having fun. Over the three days you will work with our tutors towards an exciting performance to showcase to family and friends on the final night. We are very lucky that this event has been able to run after gaining some support from The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo's Access to Arts and Culture Fund. This year's Easter Youth Gaitherin' will be from the 8th-10th April 2019 and tickets are now on sale! If you are aged between 9-18, and want to meet and play music with other young musicians then come along to three days of folk music workshops in Leith Theatre. This years fantastic tutors are Steven Blake, Heather MacLeod, Sally Simpson Music and Roo Geddes. Options include whistle & pipes, Fiddle (all levels), strings, whistle & flute, song and mixed instrument group work. Fiddle Weekend at Hatton Castle (May 2018) Details Another tremendous opportunity to hone your fiddling skills under the nurturing tutelage of 8 time fiddle champion Gregor Borland. Enjoy 2 full days, (Saturday and Sunday) of fiddle tuition. At Gregor's Fiddlingscool fiddle camps, you get more than just a tune... More than just the notes..it's about the bowing, bow management, ornamentation and the essence of the tune. These are all tools that will enhance your 'feel', understanding and playing of any tune!..All levels and experience of players are encouraged to join us. these are the most important parts of learning this kind of music. It is a language, so to be understood you need all of the tools at your fingertips. Hatton Castle was built around 1575 by Laurence, the 4th Lord Oliphant, on the lands given to Sir William Olifard by Robert the Bruce in 1317 for his support in the Wars of Independence. This fiddle weekend is a rare and amazing opportunity to meet, learn from and fully immerse yourself in a few days of music with the fiddling brothers, Iain and Alasdair Fraser. Both brothers have taught and performed worldwide and are now coming together to share their passion and expertise in the beautiful Scottish Borders town of Kelso. This music event is open to all fiddle players who would enjoy and feel comfortable within a deep learning experience or can play jigs and reels up to speed and have some experience of learning and playing by ear (not just for fiddle player). The fiddle weekend kicks off on the evening of Friday 1st February at the Cross Keys Hotel in Kelso with all participants gathering together for an evening meal followed by an informal session. The weekend will continue with 2 days of world class music workshops and teaching and a variety of evening activities and music sessions concluding with a performance by all participants. The cost of the Merlin Winter Fiddle Weekend including the course, all meals and 3 nights accommodation is £350.00 per person with a course only option (including lunch and evening meals) for £150.00 per person. Casa Rotja, situated in the Albaida valley at the foot of the Sierra Grossa, was originally built as a 17th Century farm, remodelled in 1889 and again in 2002. It consists of 2 houses and the original large bodega, where the fiddle lessons are generally given. It is noted for its fabulous acoustics!
