Irish Barn Dance. Called dancing. You don't need to know what to do. Last year it was a great night.
Twisty Willow has evolved. Beginning in 1990 with a larger "Bothy Band" format performing mainly at the Auckland Irish Club, the band was then at the fore front of the developing Irish pub scene in Auckland through the 90's. The new millennium has seen Twisty Willow move more into private and corporate entertainment around the North Island of New Zealand and sharing our music across the internet.
After 24 years, Twisty Willow has passed the 2000th gig milestone. Over the years we have produced 7 albums some traditional and others original. Check out our website for details.

An Evening with Lúnasa
at The Cedar
- Sunday, March 11 at 7:30 PM CDT
Next Week · - The Cedar Cultural Center
416 Cedar Ave S, - Minneapolis,
- Minnesota 55454
- Named for an ancient Celtic harvest festival in honor of the Irish god Lugh, patron of the arts, Lúnasa is indeed a gathering of some of the top musical talents in Ireland. Its members have helped form the backbone of some of the greatest Irish groups of the decade.
Bassist Trevor Hutchinson was a key member of The Waterboys, and later he, with guitarist Donogh Hennessy, would form the dynamic rhythm section of The Sharon Shannon Band; Ed Boyd (Flook, Michael McGoldrick Band) has recently replaced Hennessy; Fiddler Sean Smyth is an All-Ireland champion who has played with Donal Lunny’s Coolfin; Kevin Crawford, considered to be among the finest flutists in Ireland played with the acclaimed traditional group Moving Cloud; and, piper Cillian Vallely of the famous Vallely artistic clan has performed with Riverdance and recently recorded with Bruce Springsteen. Folk Roots magazine has rightly termed them an “Irish music dream team.”

The Basel Tattoo
is a military music event that attracts only the very best bands from across the globe and thus covers all music genres, from march to rock, folk to classical music. We strive not only to show the diversity of top international bands, but also to produce a show filled with musical highlights. Breathtaking choreographies, beautiful dancers and dramatic show elements play an important role in the overall experience of the spectators.
The Basel Tattoo falls under the patronage of the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS). The Basel Tattoo is presented annually at the historical barracks in the heart of Basel, on the banks of the Rhine. It is recognised internationally as the second largest Tattoo in the world after the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and has, over the past eleven years, hosted over 1 million spectators
Situated in the centre of Europe, our spectators hail not only from Switzerland but also from many other countries such as France, Germany, Italy, Norway, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. We therefore provide a unique world stage on which bands can represent their countries.
Each Basel Tattoo show lasts about two hours, opening with a fanfare and ending with a spectacular finale, in which all bands line up in the arena to give the audience one last memory of the Basel Tattoo. In 2018 there are approximately 1'000 participants from all over the world.

International Bagpipe Day - March 10th
Bagpipes have a long history that spans the ages and spans many regions. It is an instrument that has weathered the test of time and surely deserves to be honored on International Bagpipe Day!
Putting this day together was with the hope of bringing awareness of the over 130 different types of bagpipe throughout the world. This is an ancient instrument and is claimed to be represented on a Hittite slab dated to 1000 BC! |

Blas Presents
Matt Molloy, John Carty
& Arty McGlynn
Wednesday, July 4 at 9 PM - 12 AM UTC+01
Dolans Pub
4 Dock Road, Limerick, Ireland Ireland
The 22nd Blas International Summer School of Irish Traditional Music and Dance proudly presents Matt Molloy, John Carty & Arty McGlynn as part of their public concert series in Upstairs Dolans Pub, Limerick City.
One of the most exciting Trad combinations of recent times, Matt Molloy and John Carty explore the rich and varied tapestry of the fiddle and flute tradition of North Connaught. They are delighted to be joined by Ireland’s number one guitar player, Arty McGlynn.
Considered by many as the greatest flute player of our time, Matt Molloy has been a member of The Chieftains for over three decades and was also a founding member of the legendary Bothy Band. His solo albums, as well as his trio recording with Tommy Peoples and Paul Brady in the late 70’s brought flute playing to a new level.
John Carty’s musical prowess has grown steadily since his debut recording 20 years ago and he has since produced a plethora of solo recordings. A member of the bands At the Racket and Patrick Street, John finds himself in constant demand as a musician and teacher. Both Matt and John are recipients of the prestigious TG4 Traditional Musician of the Year Award.
Arty is without question the finest guitar player in Ireland with a unique understanding of the music he performs. His first solo album, McGlynn's Fancy, was the first recording where the guitar is played in an authentic traditional style, and as such has been hailed as a classic in the traditional music world. His subtle and imaginative guitar playing is the perfect accompaniment to this unique duet.

Nick Dow's Layers release tour: Supporting his debut album Layers and his upcoming tour, Auckland-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Nick Dow is joined by a string trio to showcase his beautiful songs for a very special RNZ live session. For this RNZ session Nick has rearranged two of his songs – 'Afraid For You' and 'If I had Eyes', to be played by a few violins, a cello and an acoustic guitar. The result is a stunning performance, particularly of the emotional ‘Afraid For You’ – a song about his relationship with his mother.

Rapalje
returns to Green Angel after many years!
For this unique double concert on 8 June 2018 we will perform together with our friends from Ireland: The Kilkennys.
Rapalje
Rapalje was a welcome guest in the Green Angel for years, so it is a party that the four men will come back again. Not too long ago they played in a sold out theater, but now it's time for the poproom! Pounding jigs and reels, sensitive ballads and a touch of heavy metal take you through Scottish highlands, Irish plains, taverns and inns. Armed with nothing but their instruments and voice, these torchbearers know how to convince everyone of Celtic music.
The Kilkennys
Everyone who has ever experienced a concert by the Irish folk group The Kilkennys agrees: this band is an absolute live sensation! The four race-Irish meander energetically through their folk repertoire. Bands like The Dubliners and The Clancy Brothers are shining examples for The Kilkennys. The musician knows how to make something completely unique from existing traditionals, without losing sight of the essence of the songs. "We want to continue that tradition and keep it alive."
When The Kilkennys were guests at the annual Zomerfolk Festival in Groningen in 2016, organized by the men of Rapalje, a brotherhood for life was concluded. Tonight, both bands will play their own set, but they will also release together. Fasten your seatbelts!

- It is a family festival.
- Its constitution and defined focus.
- Although it has a core committee, it was ‘owned’ by a larger group of people.
- It seeks out new performers.
- It books ‘special people’ – not necessarily stars, but people with an X factor.
- Its links with Ireland and England.
- It isn’t a ‘manufactured’ festival, it grew from established folk clubs and is organised by folk enthusiasts.

For everyone in the Guelph area, check out the SSSG Spring Concert that is taking place this coming Sunday at the River Run Centre! It's going to be quite a display of music and talent as up to 200 musicians (from this school) will be performing together on stage. For more information, go to
http://artset.net/sssg/program/events.html.
The SSSG offers Suzuki early childhood education classes; weekly private lessons in violin, viola & cello; regular group lessons; orchestras; chamber music; and parent enrichment classes. There are no auditions to enter the program—every child is welcome. SSSG has a bursary fund available for families in need of financial support.
At the SSSG, students are also performers. We see the need for young people to gain confidence, sensitivity and leadership skills through performing with and for others. We put on two mass concerts a year at the River Run Centre, as well as solo recitals, joint concerts with other youth arts organizations, performances at the local Kiwanis Music Festival, as well as school concerts and performances at many community festivals and events throughout the year. Our senior students perform at a very high level both in solo and group performances. Many of them do RCM exams and are scholarship winners at Guelph Kiwanis Music Festival and provincial finalists at the Ontario Music Festivals Association. They have participated in tours and student exchanges in Ontario, Alberta, Newfoundland and Labrador, Quebec, Manitoba and in the United States, China, Poland and France.
Since 1972, the Suzuki String School of Guelph (SSSG) has raised funds, organized activities and performed at countless community events to meet its goals to advance the art of music, build communities, provide accessibility to music education to all members of our communities, create the next generation of positive community members and leaders, and strengthen culture and civil society.
Our aim is to permit as many children as possible, regardless of socioeconomic situation, to develop into confident and well-rounded individuals through music education; and to improve quality of life in our community through music. Together we can foster vibrant and self‐sustained communities in the Guelph/Wellington region.
Through music the school strives to nurture the growth of young leaders that will continue to contribute to our communities as well-rounded, competent adults.

A Ceilidh Band of musicians, well-known from both Folk Club and the Monday night traditional sessions including Russell Gillies and Sophia Bidwell, will provide the music for the called Ceilidh dance.
This is a night for everyone to participate in, you don’t need a partner. To make sure everyone knows what to do, ‘caller’, Gary Elford, explains and demonstrates each dance before everyone ‘walks the dance’ to learn the steps – then it’s off at a pace!

The 2018 Las Vegas Highland Games
The festival is held at the park Saturday & Sunday, with a Ceilidh party TBA.
http://www.lasvegascelticsociety.org/
One weekend each April the Las Vegas Celtic Society throws the Las Vegas Highland Games, a massive festival for the community featuring Celtic music, food, vendors, and athletics. Some of the highlights include:
Live Celtic music on our main stage all weekend long. Look forward to seeing some truly unique and authentic Celtic acts featuring bagpipes, guitars, mandolins, and tribal drums. There's plenty of grass seating in front of the stage, so bring your lawn chair (or check out our VIP Tent)
Highland Dance Competition on Saturday organized by the Las Vegas Highland Dance Association and sanctioned by FUSTA. Typically we have 80 or more highland dancers of all ages competing to live bagpipe music. This takes place on our second stage.
Bagpipe and Drum Band Competition put on by LVCS and sanctioned by WUSPBA. There are 10 to 15 bagpipe and drum bands of varying skill levels competing against one another in our competition area. There is also solo competition for bagpipers and drummers that takes place in the early morning to afternoon with about 100 participants.
Scottish Heavy Athletics sponsored by local businesses and put on by LVCS. These guys and gals throw some seriously heavy stuff. The event features throwing weights, putting the stone, hammer throwing, sheaf tossing, and the infamous caber toss (those telephone poles you see them hurling). These are all fascinating to watch and true tests of physical strength.
The VIP Tent. Last but certainly not least, we have the best seats in the house. The VIP tent has an excellent view of the main stage events, as well as inclusive food and drink in a great setting. You can find out more by clicking here.
There is so much more to the Highland Games, including food vendors, kilts and toy vendors, whisky tastings, and even a children's glen. It truly is a massive event, and we look forward to seeing you this year!

GREGOR BORLAND
FIDDLE
Gregor grew up near Inverness in the Scottish highlands and started fiddle lessons with Donald Riddell at the age of 9. After several years and success in fiddle competitions all over Scotland, Donald sent him to continue his studies with Hector MacAndrew, an acclaimed fiddler in the north-eastern tradition. Both his teachers inspired and influenced his great love of highland pipe marches and stirring strathspeys.
After moving to Edinburgh, Gregor played, toured and recorded with many great bands and artists - Kathryn Tickell, Davy Steele, Jim Malcolm and Burach, to name just a few. He now has his own teaching studio in Edinburgh, runs annual fiddle weeks in stunning locations, teaches at clubs all around Scotland and is in demand as a guest instructor at fiddle schools as far afield as the USA and New Zealand.

16 Higgs Rd, Mount Wellington, Auckland, 1060, New Zealand
Music workshop and band rehearsal for Contra Band
Everyone welcome, all levels, all instruments (players only, no watchers please). Please bring your own instrument. If you're on electric, please bring your own practice amp (or practice acoustic). Come along, learn new tunes and new techniques and have some fun.
Contra music is a living folk tradition with a basic framework that makes it easy for anyone to join in but encourages creativity and personal expression so you can bring it up to date and make it your own.
Contra music is written so anyone can join in at any level and have fun. For beginners, there are simple chords written above the bar. If you're a bit better, you can play the dots as written. A step up and you can start adding grace notes. And if you're really good, you can improvise and jam over the top.
