Celtic Music Group
Otonga School Arts Centre
105 Otonga Road
Rotorua
We are a small group of enthusiastic players of differing ability levels who
meet to experience the pleasure of learning and playing Celtic (Irish and
Scottish) music together.
At each meeting one person is rostered to teach a new tune to the group.
This is learnt by ear, the tune being broken down into small chunks, repeated
many times, slowly. After this we normally have a general jam of previously
learnt tunes
We have members who play violin, whistle, flute, guitar, mandolin and
keyboard. All traditional Celtic instruments can be accommodated.
We meet approximately every three to four weeks on a Friday
during term
time at 7.30 p.m. in the Otonga
School Arts Centre (adjacent to the car park and hall).

Welsh Dragon Bar The Wellington Session happens on Tuesday nights from 7:30 p.m
10/12 Cambridge Terrace, Wellington 6011, New Zealand.
All players of traditional Irish music are welcome. The session starts slowly, as we work through beginner and recently learnt tunes. If you are relatively new to playing, come along at the start.
The pace usually picks up as the evening progresses, so if you are already fluent in tunes, come along after 8:30. Of course, we’d be happy to have experienced players earlier on as well!
Slow Session - 7:30 to 8:40 The slow session is an opportunity for players who are starting out with Irish traditional music and want an opportunity to play tunes that they’re learning or have already learnt with others in a supportive environment. We don’t teach tunes directly in this session but it’s a great chance to practice playing with others. There’s some scope for accompaniment but the focus is on the melody instruments. See our Slow Session page for more information
.
Regular Session - 8:50 to late The regular session is a different beast from the slow session that happens earlier in the evening. We want this to be an excellent Irish session with a very strong focus on the traditional melody instruments playing traditional tunes. This means that accompaniment from rhythm instruments will be limited so that the melody can shine. See our Regular Session page for more information.
Tunes Archive Many of the tunes that get played at the sessions, including those we’ve been learning in the slow session, are in our Tunes Archive page. We add new tunes reasonably often - you can check those out in our Latest Tunes page
